China has recently established itself in the Specialty Coffee world. While coffee has been grown in China since the late 1800s through the influence of French missionaries, large-scale production didn't take off until the 1980s. Through investments from the Chinese Government, the United Nations, and a leading coffee-roasting company, the country has rapidly improved. By 2016, China was ranked as one of the top 20 coffee producers worldwide.
Moreover, internal consumption in China is growing rapidly and the Specialty Coffee culture is booming, creating an added driver toward increasing quality.
Coffee production takes place in western Yunnan province, Pu’er, Baoshan, Dehong, and Menglian. Most of the coffee produced in China is washed; however, natural and honey processes can also be found.
Our coffee comes from the most consistent specialty-grade washed coffees in the Menglian region of Yunnan. This is due largely to Mrs. Na, who owns and operates the washing station. She purchases cherries from local farms on the mountain, creating a foundation of consistency year after year.
It sits at an altitude of 1100 miles, just around the Banka Village in Menglian, Yunnan. The coffee cherries are picked before undergoing the washed process. They are dried on a raised bed and mechanical dryer until the moisture level reaches the desired level. The coffee then goes through “reposo” for 2 months to stabilize and normalize the moisture level.
In the Menglian region, the Dongka coffee is picked by the Akha, Dai and Lahu tribes. The farm and washing station owners are members of the Han people.
You will enjoy the sweet-balanced mouthfeel of the Sweet Apricot, Nuts, Black Tea with subtle notes of Date and a finish of Honey sweet linger.
